We are seeking a dedicated, skilled and detail-oriented Live-out Gardener to join the Walled Garden team on a prestigious private estate close to Andover in Hampshire. With a strong passion for horticulture and a hands-on work ethic, you will contribute to the care, productivity and presentation of the Estate’s gardens.
Working under the guidance of the Team Leader and reporting to the Head Gardener, you will be responsible for maintaining the Walled Garden, Glasshouses, Orchard, Service Yard, Composting Facility and Homewood South. From time to time, you may be asked to carry out additional duties as required by the Estate Management Team.
What you’ll be doing
- Supporting the Team Leader with the planning and delivery of garden maintenance tasks
- Carrying out regular watering, weeding, pruning and fertilising, both outdoors and within glasshouse environments
- Planting, cultivating and maintaining vegetables, fruit, cut flowers, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and containerised plants
- Caring for indoor and containerised outdoor plants
- Propagating seasonal vegetables using a range of methods to support fruit and vegetable displays
- Monitoring and controlling pests and diseases
- Assisting with landscaping and garden improvement projects
- Maintaining tools, machinery and equipment in safe working order

Regularly inspecting all areas, including less visible locations, to ensure consistently high standards
- Maintaining tidy, weed-free and well-presented growing and working areas
- Respecting the privacy and confidentiality of the Estate’s owners, residents and guests at all times
Teamwork and communication
- Working collaboratively with the wider garden team to ensure efficient operations
- Communicating clearly with the Team Leader regarding issues, supplies or maintenance requirements
Safety and compliance
- Working in line with health and safety legislation and best practice
- Reading, understanding and following all risk assessments and safety procedures as directed
Your work will help ensure that owners, residents, team members and visitors enjoy a welcoming, productive and well-maintained garden environment throughout the year.
Experience and skills required
- Practical experience in fruit and vegetable production (preferred)
- Experience working with glasshouse displays (advantageous)
- Good knowledge of plant care and maintenance, including glasshouse production
- Experience using horticultural power tools
- Relevant machinery certifications preferred, including compact tractors, utility vehicles and PA1/PA6a
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Physically fit and able to undertake manual work
- Strong attention to detail and high personal standards
- Good communication skills and a professional approach
- Horticultural qualification or related certification (desirable)
- Full UK driving licence with own car due to the location of the property
- Discrete, reliable and trustworthy, with the ability to maintain confidentiality
- Proactive, flexible and willing to support other Estate teams when required
Working hours and conditions
- 5 days per week, 8:00am – 5:00pm
- Some weekend work required on a rota basis
- Lunch provided when on duty
- This role involves physical work including lifting, bending and standing for extended periods, with outdoor and glasshouse work in all weather conditions
Salary: £32,000 – £37,000 gross per annum
