Live-Out Gardener, Moreton -in – Marsh , UK

We are seeking an experienced, knowledgeable, and proactive Gardener to join a small household team on a small farm comprising approximately 50 acres, including approximately 5 acres of gardens. This is a hands-on role suited to a knowledgeable, adaptable horticultural professional who takes pride in their garden and have an exceptionally keen eye for detail.

The successful candidate will have experience with vegetable cultivation and rotation,

seasonal planting & bulb management, pruning, all aspects relating to diverse plant care, weeding, overwintering and irrigation. They will be self-motivated and highly organised – being able to plan and manage their daily, weekly and monthly jobs according to the season. Whilst taking ownership of the garden and all plants you will do so collaboratively within a welcoming household team.

This is an informal and welcoming family home requiring a flexible and positive approach to work whilst being unflappable. You will be able to cope with last minute changes whilst maintaining your own time management and list of priorities. 

Duties outlined not limited to :

  • Maintain and develop a diverse garden, including borders, lawns, pathways, and landscaped areas to the highest standards.
  • Help plan and implement seasonal planting 
  • Manage vegetable gardens, including sowing, planting, cultivating, harvesting, and crop rotation.
  • Carry out regular weeding, pruning, deadheading, mulching, and soil management.
  • Monitor plant health and identify pests, diseases, and nutritional deficiencies, implementing appropriate treatments where necessary.
  • Operate garden machinery and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Assist with estate-wide projects and support the family when required.
  • Ensure all outdoor areas are kept tidy to an exceptional standard at all times.
  • Work proactively, identifying areas for improvement and taking initiative where appropriate. 

Candidate Requirements

  • Proven experience working within a private country house, formal gardens, or similar horticultural environment, ideally with sole charge.
  • Strong horticultural knowledge, including seasonal planting, plant care, vegetable cultivation, and garden maintenance.
  • A genuine passion for gardening and all types of plants. Cutting for fresh flowers and harvesting vegetables at the appropriate time
  • Working closely with the family and understanding when to maintain privacy, for example when friends are visiting.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a wider team, asking for help when necessary.
  • Proactive, organised, and able to prioritise workloads efficiently.
  • Excellent attention to detail with high standards.
  • Flexible attitude and willingness to assist in other areas when required.
  • Good communication skills with a professional yet approachable manner.
  • Relevant horticultural qualifications are desirable but not essential, depending on experience.

Salary : £38 -£40k

Hours : 8-5 – can be discussed
